Hello there my little faces. Today, we’ll talk about The Untamed series ( original title: Chen qing ling ) which is a Chinese production of 2019. The series is based on the book Mo Dao Zu Shi ( English title: The grandmaster of demonic cultivation ) by Mo Xiang Tong Xiu and can be considered a supernatural period drama.

The main character of the story is the young Wei WuXian who after a series of misunderstandings and wrong choices by himself and other characters is treated as the villain, but he’s not actually the bad guy. Trying to confront the real villain, the leader of the Wen clan and stop him from becoming the absolute ruler of the clans, his allies until then, as well as his own family will turn against him. The story has two time periods. The “now” of the series and 16 years ago and we see them both separately, something that helps the viewer not to be confused but also to better understand and in depth the story and its characters.

In the book, the love story of Wei WuXian and Lan Zhan dominates and we see how they manage to overcome all the obstacles that tried to separate them to finally be together. Something that is a little different in the series. China is known for its censorship against gay couples and does not allow the representation of these people in series and movies. So, in the series, WuXian and Lan Zhan are presented as two close friends who would do anything for each other. At least that’s what they look like on the outside, as the series is full of hidden messages that fans can see how much they are in love with each other.

Looks, hugs, meaningful outbursts and ancient Chinese customs ( yes I’m talking about the chickens scene ) referring to the wedding are just a few of the screenwriters’ hidden messages to fans.

The chemistry between the two protagonists, the excellent cast, the constant twists and the amazing landscapes are just some of the reasons that made me love this series. The script is extremely meticulous and full of hidden messages as I already said, the direction is very good and the fact that the actors did the most dangerous scenes on their own is a huge plus for me. The cast not only found themselves hanging by ropes and bouncing in the air, but received special training before filming began on how to speak, stand, fight with a sword or bow; took musical instrument lessons and endless hours of exercise in order for all of them to be in excellent physical condition.

If I had to find something bad to say that could be about the effects. In general, Chinese productions do not have excellent CGI. In this series, because supernatural perforations are a part of it I’d like for CGI to be a little better… but, I don’t know if it’s because I was fascinated by the story or they made CGI better as the episodes go by but it stopped bother me anyone.

The series has one season of 50 episodes and is available on Netflix.
