The Love Hypothesis by Ali Hazelwood

Hello hello,

Last Saturday I finished one of the books I loved the most this year, at least until now. “The Love Hypothesis” by Ali Hazelwood made it onto my TBR because I saw that its movie adaptation is coming this September, and I always want to know if a book is better than the movie or not.

Olive is a biology student doing her PhD in cancer at Stanford. Her biggest problem though is not the studies or her experiments, but Anh, her best friend. Olive doesn’t believe in long-lasting romantic relationships like Anh, so when Olive’s ex-date, because he wasn’t a boyfriend, falls for Anh, Olive has to step back. In order to convince her that she doesn’t care if she’ll date Jeremy or not, lies to Anh about dating someone else. Everything goes according to her plan until the moment that Anh sees her at her lab, the exact time that Olive is supposed to be on a date with her boyfriend.

Olive panics and kisses the first guy that she sees. Anh leaves, and everything could be over with a quick apology to the man if he weren’t Adam Carlsen. One of the youngest and most talented professors at the university. A well-known tyrant and asshole to the bone, who likes to destroy his students’ papers with one word. She tries to apologize, but when he agrees to pretend to be her fake boyfriend for his own reasons, Olive soon will figure out that maybe he’s not that bad after all.

My thoughts:

What an incredible book! I think I found the only character ( after Tessa Gray and Sydney Sage ) that I can relate to so much. Olive reminded me so much of myself on more than one occasion ( minus the love for science, I was always more of a literature and artist girl ). The author created a character so close to reality ( at least my reality ) that sometimes it was kinda scary how much I was getting her.

Adam and Olive’s relationship and how they became friends and they slowly developed feelings for each other was beautiful. Well, at least Olive… Poor Adam was gone for her years ago. Adam being a huge green flag is a fact and the way he supported and helped her was absolutely perfect.

We had some awesome side characters as well, with Holden, Adam’s best friend, being my personal favorite ( and sharing the same birthday with him is just a bonus ). I would like to see Tom rot in jail, but being fired, I guess, was okay enough.

I really loved the book and now I can’t wait for the movie as well, and from the trailer, it looks really promising.

It’s a 4.8/5 from me.
