Common Goal by Rachel Reid

Hello hello,

It is finally time to return to Rachel Reid’s universe of idiotic, in-love hockey players, and I couldn’t be happier for that. Today, we will talk about book number four. The “Common Goal” is beautifully written, but let’s see why!

At forty-one, Eric was already feeling old. Being a professional hockey player, a goalie to be exact, was the main reason that his body had already started feeling stiff. Also, being surrounded by much younger teammates wasn’t helping his depressing feelings. On top of that, his wife was divorcing him after 20-plus years of marriage, and starting to have a crush on Kyle, who was a man and fifteen years younger, wasn’t helping either!

Kyle always liked older men than him. They were his weakness and that was the reason having his heart broken more than one times. So now, at twenty-five, he had decided that he was done with older lovers. Until he met Eric.

Spending a lot of time at the bar Kyle was working, Eric found himself understanding more than ever that he was bisexual. The two of them started spending time together, and Kyle started helping him to find a man… to help him explore his sexuality. When one thing leads to another and they kiss, Kyle has an idea.

He offers a friends-with-benefits friendship to Eric. In that way, he will be able to explore his sexuality with someone whom he trusts. Since neither of them is interested in dating each other, it would be perfect!

My thoughts:

I love all Rachel’s characters so much, but this story was so painfully beautiful that it destroyed me. I really liked how she dealt with Eric’s character. Being bisexual and demisexual is not easy. Especially if you haven’t understood what was going on with you until a certain age.

She managed to write a mostly taboo trope ( the age gap can be tricky ), into a beautiful and painful romance. Both main characters were absolutely amazing and being able to see so much of my boys, Scott and Kip, was a huge plus.

It’s a 4.5/5 from me.
