The Judge From Hell: review

Hello there,

I know I was absent for a while, but now I’m back and I bring with me a new gem.! Of course, I’m talking about the k-drama “The Judge From Hell”, which aired its last episode yesterday.

I had the series in my watching list for a while, since I saw all the comments online, but I hadn’t had the time to watch it until now. When I saw yesterday that it would end it was coming to an end I decided that it was time to watch it finally. With no plans for my Weekend, it was a nice opportunity to do a marathon and I don’t regret it!

Kand Bitna is a well-known judge trying to do her job as well as she can until someone brutally murders her. Due to a mistake, she ends up in Hell and she tries to convince the judge there, the demon Justitia, that she doesn’t deserve that destiny. Justitia, tired from all the bad people trying to change her mind, barely listens to her and she makes the decision to send her to Hell.

When her boss, the demon Bael, finds out about the huge mistake he exiles Justitia and Valak, her assistant to Earth. She has to find and kill 10 murders in one year in order to be able to return to her position in Hell. She thinks that this task will be a piece of cake, but she hasn’t met Detective Han Daon yet.

The two of them start spending time together, with Daon trying to figure out who is the killer of the murders that he tries to catch and Bitna finding this human interesting. Things will take an unexpected turn when Daon finds out her true identity. Now, they have to work together in order to catch the serial killer J who has returned after 26 years.

Beware of spoilers!!

Let me tell you how much I liked the fact that we saw all the killers taking the punishment they deserved. Every time that Bitna was bitting the shit out of some psycho and making them feel what their victims were feeling, I brought my popcorn out! It was extremely satisfying and I don’t think I have felt that way about a show for a while. Usually, I don’t enjoy seeing people being tortured but on this show, it was pure justice for the victims.

Another huge plus is the cast, the main one but the guests as well. Every single one of them is so talented that I didn’t expect that. The writing was pretty good without plot holes, even if I’d like to see what happened to real Bitna after she tried to escape from Hell. But other than that it left zero questions. Well, I don’t count the “open” ending because it was pretty clear that she decided to accept Lucifer’s offer. ( But I’d like a second season watching her being the queen she is while dating Daon. )

All the characters were well-written and the cinematography was on point. Some CGI may be good be better ( for example, my favorite demonic “kitties” looked fake as hell ) but it was such a few of those scenes that it didn’t bother me. Finally, it had one of the most beautiful endings showing us what happened with all the victims that Bitna helped as a judge.

I give it a solid 8.5/10 and I hope for a second season to be announced.

Until next time…
