Valeria: season 1 review

Hello there,

Valeria is a Spanish tv series available on Netflix that you’ll love ( or not ).

When I started watching the series, the vibe I got was almost the same as the iconic “Sex And The City”. The series follows the lives of four best friends. Valeria ( the main protagonist ), Lola, Carmen and Nerea.

Valeria has been married to Adrian for 6 years but things are not so well between them. She starts to make an effort for them, but Victor comes to her life and his charming personality manages to make her have second thoughts about her marriage. At the same time, she tries to write and publish her first novel but nothing seems to work.

On the other side, Lola is in a relationship with a married guy and she lets everyone believe that she doesn’t care and that’s what she really wants. Something that it’s a complete lie. On the contrary, all she wants is someone to love her and to build a strong relationship, but the trauma that she has, because her mother abandoned her ( and her brother ), makes it difficult to fight for what she wants.

Carmen is in love with one of her colleagues but Borja seems that he doesn’t share the same feelings with her. At least that’s what we think at first but later we find out that he likes her as well. Things between them though will become a little bit awkward when Carmen receives a great job offer but she finds out that the other person that’s talking about the same job is Borja.

Last but not least, Nerea is a lawyer. She works at her parents’ law office, but they’re pushing and controlling and she finds it difficult to talk to them about her life. Being a lesbian makes it more difficult, but she finds “refuge” in a feministic organization and starts working with them.

Just before the first season comes to an end, Valeria cheats on Adrian with Victor, and she manages to write an erotic novel that her publisher finally wants to make a deal with her. The only catch is that they want her to use a stage name for the novel to be part of a fantom writer who’s in reality nonexistent but the book house uses writers to publish their books that way.

Lola and Dani ( her baby brother ) have to deal with their mother who comes back to meet them, at the same time that Nerea tells her parents that she’s a lesbian and leaves the house. Valeria, also has to put her life in order again, since she and Adrian decided to divorce and to take a decision. Will she publish her book under a stage name, or not?

The first season has 8 episodes and it was ok. Not my favorite series but is a nice alternative if you like this genre. I disliked some things, such as the cheating trope, both in Valeria and Lola’s stories, but I get it that the creators wanted to make the series as real as possible and unfortunately, people cheat. I can’t say that I have a favorite character because all had things that I liked and things that I didn’t. But I think I liked the most Lola’s character development because in only 8 episodes we see her get through a lot of stages in her life and in the end make the best possible decision for herself.

It’s a 7.5/10 from me and I hope that I’ll like the next season ( it’s 4 in total ) more.

Until next time…
