BL / YAOI Recommendations – “The Classics” edition

I was feeling like rewatching a series, so as I was searching what to watch, I came across some of my favorites. I couldn’t decide what to choose so I ended up watching nothing, but I had an idea of sharing with you some of my favorite “classic” BLs. Series that made a huge impact when they released, series that it’s hard to forget and series that will always hold a special space in our hearts. So, let’s begin.

TharnType (2019)

Country: Thailand

Episodes: 2 seasons of 12 episodes each & a movie

Genre: Romance, Life, Drama

My rating: 8.5/10

Type is a university student who loves football. Tharn, his roommate, is a student at music major and openly gay. Type is a homophobic man and although he likes Tharn, when he learns he’s gay, a war begins between them.  But as time goes by, Tharn finds out why Type is hating gay men so much and begins to sympathize with him. As Type is a very difficult person and Tharn very cheerful and extrovert, it’s very interesting to watch how their relationship grows.

Key points:

  • Character development
  • Enemies to lovers
  • Friends with benefits
  • Dynamic characters
  • Cohabitation
  • Smut

Personal opinion:

What amazed me about TharnType, is the amount of the character development and the realism of their relationship (especially in the second season). Kinda wished some “bad” guys had a more legal punishment for their actions, but I have to admit that the protagonists handled things very well.

Bad Buddy (2021)

Country: Thailand

Episodes: 12 & 2 special episodes

Genre: Comedy, Romance, Youth

My rating: 10/10

Pat and Pran have known each other since they were infants. Despite being neighbors and living next door to each other, their families are enemies, so being friends was forbidden for them and they always had to compete. One day, Prat is forced to change schools and live far away, so things calmed down for some years, until they meet again at university, when they continue being enemies as always. But…were they ever really enemies?

Key points:

  • Wholesome relationship
  • Rivals to friends to lovers
  • Secret romance
  • Insane chemistry
  • Well written plot
  • Cliffhangers

Personal opinion:

What can be so magical about this series, is the fact that it may seems like a light story, but behind all the funny and cute moments is hidden a very serious and sad plot. But as difficult as things may be, the series gives emphasis at the optimistic side of life.

HIStory3: Trapped (2019)

Country: Taiwan

Episodes: 20

Genre: Action, Thriller, Mystery, Romance

My rating: 10/10

Meng Shao Fei, is a police officer who for four years is obsessed with a case involving the death of a veteran cop and a gangster. He’s always tracking Tang Yi, the new gang leader who was the only survivor in the incident. Tang Yi, is also hunting for answers and as the story unfolds the two of them find themselves trapped in a dangerous game full of suspense and mystery.

Key points:

  • Enemies to lovers
  • Dangerous romance
  • Cute second couple
  • Revenge plot
  • Suspense
  • Plot twists

Personal opinion:

I enjoyed this series so much. I think it’s an equal mix of cute, sexy and serious. It got me hooked until the very end and I’ll always wish for a second season, even though it’s too late.

I Told Sunset about You (2020) / I Promised You the Moon (2021)

Country: Thailand

Episodes: 10

Genre: Romance, Life, Youth, Drama

My rating: 10/10

Teh and Oh were very good friends until they parted ways because of an incident. Many years later, in their final year of school, they unexpectedly meet each other again, at a Chinese language class. They both started as rivals, but this reunion, enlightened all the forgotten feelings between them and they start rebuilding their relationship.

Key points:

  • Coming of age
  • Realistic plot
  • Character development
  • Friends to lovers
  • Slow burn romance
  • Self-discovery

Personal opinion:

Even though the second season may be indifferent for some people, I personally loved it, because the amount of realism in both seasons haunted me. After watching it, I couldn’t watch anything else and got me thinking about it for days. There is no cute couple or fanservice, just people like us, who make mistakes. And I think the message the series wants to pass, is that there is a right time for everything and before we get involved with anyone, we have to acknowledge ourselves first.

What’s your opinion about my favourites? Can’t even count how many times I’ve rewatched them. Is there one of them you haven’t watched yet? Are there some other “classic’ BL series you prefer? I would love to read your recommendations.

Maybe I’ll come back with a second part!

Thanks for reading this,

Utaku

  1. “bad buddy” for sure, “not me”, “big dragon” and “bed friend” are a few that I can remember right now.
