TV JUNKIE

XO, Kitty: season 1 review

Let’s be clear here… Every single one of us that had watched the “To all the boys I loved before” movies, Kitty was our favorite character. She was the youngest, nosy sister of the Coveys and a successful matchmaker! ( Let’s not forget that Lara Jean and Peter probably would never be together if it weren’t Kitty. )

When the movies ended, we left our little Kitty just having a boyfriend for herself on the family’s trip to Korea. She met Dae and they automatically clicked, but unfortunately, she had to return to the USA leaving her new boyfriend back in Seoul.

Fast forward to the present, Kitty is still dating Dae but they haven’t met again since her trip back then. Kitty takes matters into her own hands and decides to apply for a scholarship at KISS. The American boarding school in Seoul that Dae is studying. Her mom had gone to the same school as well, so Kitty thinks that she can “kill two birds with one stone”. She will be able to be with her boyfriend and at the same time she will spend some time at the school her mom studied.

When Kitty arrives in Seoul though, she finds out that Dae, her loving boyfriend dates someone else! Yuri, one of the most popular girls in KISS and in Seoul in general, claims that Dae is her own boyfriend with the Dae himself confirms that. Kitty, heartbroken and confused wants to return back home… until one crazy thought comes to her mind. She can recognize love from miles away and something in Dae and Yuri’s relationship seems off.

At the same time, the evidence that her mother had probably a baby while she was in Seoul is too many and Kitty is trying to find out who that baby could be.

Kitty talks to Q and Minho, Dae’s best friends, and tells them that she thinks that Yuri and Dae are faking their relationship for some reason. Q is not so sure about that but he likes Kitty’s personality and starts helping her to figure out what’s going.

Minho, on the other hand, can’t stand her! And Kitty has the exact same feelings for him as well. They fought all the time, about everything and everywhere… but when they needed each other they helped one another without questions and you know what that means right? THE PERFECT ENEMIES TO LOVERS TROP ( forgive my shouting ) that had me hooked since their first scene together at the airport.

I will not gonna lie or pretend… I’m team Minho and I wanted them to be together since that first scene. Most of the time my ships, even when they make no sense at first, become canon so, I had a feeling to not lose hope.

Ok, back to the story… Kitty tries to figure out if she’s right about Dae and Yuri, while Minho starts dating Madison and Q Florian, making bad decisions ( or not ) on the way.

After some time, Kitty is finally with Dae… but she starts figuring out that her feelings have changed though. She starts having a huge crush on Yuri, making her confused and guilty. At the same time, Minho figures out that he likes Kitty but he can’t say or do anything because she’s dating his best friend ( what a mess ).

Finally, right before the first season ends, because of some misunderstands Kitty ends up expelled from the school. She talks with Dae and they agree that even though they still love each other it’s not the same anymore. Kitty wants to tell Yuri about her feelings but the other girl introduces her to her girlfriend.

Kitty boards in the plain, sad about the whole situation but there is a familiar face that she didn’t know would be that happy seeing him.

Minho, who is going to visit his mom in the USA changed his ticket just to be with Kitty. She informs him about her breakup with Dae and the season ends up with Minho confessing his feelings to her.

The series was a little bit cringe, full of cliches and kind of zero plot twist… except for the love “polygon” and the secret about the baby that Kitty thinks is her brother ( even if I had figured out about this though ). Other than that it’s nothing “special” or mind-blown as a series but it’s really sweet and you’ll probably have a nice time watching it.

They tried to combine the American teen series with the Korean dramas and it was a nice try for a first-timer. Sure some cultural mistakes were made, and as a Greek is not my place to talk about them, but I believe that most of the series was really respectful to both cultures giving us a nice series to watch.

The series renewed for a second season a few days ago and all I pray is to give me the ship that I want and deserve. Minho is a sweetheart and he is probably the only one of the three love interests that treat Kitty nicely. ( The fighting doesn’t count, was nothing serious if you took a closer look at the “fights” ).

And before I leave you, I have to remark on the fact ( but I’m sure that already know ) that Gia Kim and Sang Heon Lee who play Yuri and Minho are siblings. Gia actually was born in 1992 and her little brother in 1996.

The series is a 7/10 for me.

Let me know your opinion about the series and of course, don’t forget to comment me with who you personally want Kitty to end up with.

Until next time…

xx Marilita
