Still star-crossed by Melinda Taub.

Hello there my adorable little faces. Do you remember a while ago that I had written a blog post about this series that I had totally loved? Well, now finally came the time to read the book as well.

The story is the known and this post FULL OF SPOILERS.

After the death of Romeo and Juliet, something much happens to stop Montagues and Capulets from killing each other. When Isabella, prince’s sister, returns to the town he talks to her about what happened and her thoughts on the matter give him the craziest idea. Prince Escalus’ idea shocks everyone though. He wants to marry Rosaline Tirimo, of the house of Capulet with Benvolio Montague.

When the two young enemies, hear the news they want immediately to do something to get away from this plan. Rosaline doesn’t want to marry anyone ( other than Escalus ), her plans are to become a nun after all, and Benvolio hates her with all his heart. In his mind, all this tragedy is Rosaline’s fault. You see, Romeo was in love with her before he met Juliet and he was trying with everything that he had to make her return his feelings. Something that Rosaline never did. Now Benvolio believes that if she had loved his cousin all these wouldn’t happen.

When his friends were alive, they had all their roles in their group. Romeo was their leader, something that he would always be, he was the heir to the Montagues after all. Mercutio was the clown. He loved to do pranks on the others and to make himself look like a fool. Benvolio was different from them though. He had the reputation of the womanizer ( something that he really loved ) but he was the more reasonable from his friends. He never started a fight and he would drow his sword only to protect himself and his friends. He was the only one that never killed another person.

Rosaline and Benvolio, both of them disgusted with the idea that they will end up married made a deal to not accept that. Everything was good until the party that Escalus throw for his sister. He made Isabella go and invite Rosaline in person and when she went to the party he asked her to speak with her. They went to his room where he drunk her ( and they kissed — rolling my eyes — ) and the next morning told her the cruelest and immoral thing. He would say to the whole city that she slept with him ( a total lie ) if she wouldn’t agree to marry Benvolio, something that not only would destroy her reputation but Livia’s, her sister’s, as well. ( this guy is an asshole )

After that and with no other option she said “yes” but something that no one could think about happened. A young Capulet boy found dead by the hand of Benvolio ( or that’s what everyone believes ) and Escalus ordered his guards to find him so he could face justice. At the same time he confessed his love to Rosaline ( are you serious mate? ) and she thought that she couldn’t be happier ( think again ) until the moment that Benvolio went to her balcony and asked her to go with him in order to help him find the real murder and clear his name. ( and but ‘her balcony’ I mean Juliet’s balcony as she stays at her cousin’s room. how romantic is that? )

Running for their lives, away from Verona, Rosaline finds herself to be really mad with Benvolio when he doesn’t stop and think what would happen to him if he if not be quite careful. If they don’t find the true villain, he would end up dead. A huge rainstorm is the main reason that Rosaline fell off her horse and the moment Benvolio realizes that she’s not dead he kissed her! ( Can I have a Hallelujah? ).

Count Paris found them though and he arrested Benvolio no matter if Rosaline told him that he was innocent. Rosaline, who tries to convince him that her friend ( and love of her life, if I may add ) is not guilty, finds out the truth about Paris and her aunt, Juliet’s mother. That these two are behind everything! With this clue on her hands tries to free Benvolio so they can return to Verona and warn their prince about Paris’ betrayal. Benvolio sacrifices his freedom in order for Rosaline to can escape and she goes to find Friar Lawrence and take his journal where he wrote the truth.

Rosaline, on the brink of collapse finally made it to Verona seconds before Escalus executes Benvolio and she tries to convince them that he is an innocent and the real villain is Paris and Lady Capulet. Everyone believes that she got mad when Benvolio abducted her and “ruined” her ( how dare you people? ) until the moment that her sister spoke. Paris had told everything to Livia when she found out and he even promised her to make her the next princess of Verona. Livia who isn’t a bad person at all, couldn’t stay back and watch innocent people getting hurt so she told everything to Escalus and the whole city that was there.

After that everything went into Hell. Paris went to a war with Escalus and the whole of Verona. We saw Capulets and Montagues fight side by side and saving each other until the very moment that unexpecting help from Isabella’s husband came and they won. Benvolio killed Paris when he didn’t give him another choice with only one though. He prayed that Rosaline could forgive him that became a murder.

Weeks after those events and with no news from Benvolio, Rosaline continued taking Escalus gifts even if she feels uncomfortable with that. By the time that he finally asked her to marry him, whole Verona knew that he will go that way and that was the reason that Benvolio decided to leave. He couldn’t stay and watch her marry another. Rosaline was the one that went to tell him goodbye though and started a fight about why he stopped seeing her and now leaving. Benvolio, totally confused asked her to tell him why he would stay while she would marry Escalus. The thing though was that she wouldn’t. As she said to him, she couldn’t marry him while she was in love with another.

After a few really hot and taking breath kisses, they went together to tell their families the news. They were together, in love and they got to get married ( my beautiful babes ).

Bonus:
How cute it is that Rosaline called Benvolio the whole time “Clotpole” and he called her “Harpy”. My babies, they had pet names from the begging.

Differences between the book and the tv series.

First of all, the characters’ ages are the same as the original book of “Romeo and Juliet”. Escalus’ sister, Isabella, is actually married in the book and not the badass perfection that she was in the tv series. Livia isn’t an idiot in the book while in the show Paris had her under his control without her even know that. In the book, the characters were all white people as they were in Shakespeare’s original one a huge difference as on the show the cast was a diverse one. Another huge difference was that while in the book Rosaline found out the way to save him on the show, something like that never happened. One more is that while in the book we saw a few kisses between Benvolio and Rosaline before Paris captured him, on the show the first kiss between them was in prison when Rosaline went to see him.

Wow… this post came out way too long… I hope that you’re still here people.
