If you’re following me on social media you have probably seen that a few days back I had a small accident and hurt my hand. It’s pretty difficult to type with one hand but I’ll do my best for this post, even if it takes me hours to finish it…
So, a year ago a movie that everyone loved debuted on Netflix but I wasn’t ready to watch it until now. Firstly, I thought that we will not get a happy ending and not gonna lie… after that, I forgot about it… shame on me… Well, until now. I was looking for something to watch and I found Purple Hearts on my list.
Cassie, is doing everything she can to survive… having two jobs, writing songs and performing at the same time that she is fighting with diabetes. One night, her childhood friend, Frankie, with his fellow Marines comes to the bar that she’s working for drinks before they leave for Iraq.
One of them tells her friend, half joking, that if she marries him she would have great health insurance. Cassie, desperate after she found out that her medical bills are in red, asks Frankie to marry her – only in papers – in order to be able to take her meds.
Frankie turns her down because he is in love with someone else, but his friend Luke who’s in serious debt informs her that he’s willing to do it. The only problem is that they hate each other.
Cassie and Luke got married the day before his unit leaves for Iraq but he informs her that they have to be very careful. Their phone calls, video calls, emails, etc will be under of military’s watch. They have to look like they’re in love in order to convince everyone. If someone finds out the truth they will go to a trial and one of both of them could end up in prison.
They start pretending to be totally in love, writing to each other about their days, hopes and dreams. Cassie sings songs to him, and the other Marines, on the video calls and he even wears his wedding ring all the time.
When Cassie finishes the song that she wrote because of Luke becomes viral her career takes a huge turn and she and her band becomes famous in one night. Meanwhile, Luke’s unit is ambushed and he ends up in the hospital wounded pretty badly.
After Luke returns home with wounded legs, their plans to get a “divorce” has to postpone because everyone is watching them. So now, they have to live together and take care of each other. But when you have to fake it for so long, sometimes the situation turns out to be real.
In love but stubborn, they have to leave their ego behind and fight for each other.
The movie was really nice. I enjoy it a lot and I would definitely watch it again in the future. I liked that we saw that our main leads weren’t “perfect”, it made it feel more real. I totally loved Sofia and Nicholas’ s chemistry and the way that they played their characters was incredible.
A total plus is Sofia’s voice. She’s so talented!!
It’s a 7/10 from me.
Tell me what you think about the movie in the comments below. Until next time…
xx Marilita.
