Breakaway Goal by Lyssa Lemire

Hello – hello!!

Welcome back to another book review, about the “Sin Bin Stories” book series. Following the previous two books ( “Offside Play” and “Chasing The Puck” ), “Breakaway Goal” was as good as the others.! In this book, we finally follow Maddie and Rhys’s story ( and I couldn’t be more excited ).

Maddie is two years younger than her brother, Lane, and his best friend, Rhys. Growing up with these two being friends since forever, naturally, Rhys became her best friend as well. Or, that’s what she wants to tell people, and herself. Because, let’s be real, anything else is unacceptable and delusional – at best -.

The truth is that she has been in love with Rhys for years, but he sees her only as a friend and Lane’s little sister. So, this year she’s determined to change everything. The plan is simple, and Jasmine – her other best friend -, agrees. Maddie will find someone to date, to kiss, to lose her virginity and be madly in love with him. Someone probably from her art classes. Someone sweet, and artistic, and hot. Someone will make her forget Rhys!

Rhys is a lot of things. Tall, masculated, tattooed, good at hockey, best friend to Lane and head over toes in love with Maddie since he remembers himself. He can only imagine himself with her, but except for the fact that she is his best friend’s younger sister… Maddie sees him only as a friend.

Beware of the spoilers!!!

When Maddie has an awfully disappointing first kiss with a guy whom Rhys totally crushed her date, she texts him that she needs his help. The moment that Rhys arrives and Maddie throws a bomb at him, everything changes.

She asks him to be her first because she doesn’t want her first time to be bad and she’s sure that something will not happen if Rhys is the one who takes her virginity. Rhys just for a moment, is thinking to decline her proposition, but he’s too down for her to do such a thing. So now, they start kissing and hooking up ( because he wants to do everything right for her ) and everything seems more than just an agreement.

Will they find the courage to admit their true feelings to each other? What will be Lane’s reaction when he finds out?

My thoughts.

I’m more an enemies-to-lovers than a friends-to-lovers kind of girl, but I liked this book a lot! Free of drama. No cheating. Sweet moments between the couple even before they start hooking up… Perfectly balanced, friendly, and sexually teasing.

I liked that, except that they were flirting openly, ( privately ), nothing else changed. Minor jealousy, just a hint for him to understand the possibility of losing her. If that’s the new normal in romance books, I’m more than glad.

The sneaky around was kinda hot, and I’m glad that her brother didn’t walk on them while having sex ( what an awful cliche is that? ). The slow burn was really SLOW, but I get it. We had to get past the “friends label” first.

I loved that we get seeing Hudson, Summer, Tuck and Olivia, though. Even if it was only for a few small scenes.

I can’t wait to see which hockey player will be the next book ( if we get another in this series, I’m not even sure… if anyone knows, let me know!! ) about. Personally, I hope that we’ll get one for Sebastian. He was mentioned a lot in all three books. Also, what can I say? A girl has her favorites. But, we can only wait and see.

It’s a 3.5/5 stars from me.
