Hello, hello!!
Another day, another book post!!! As you may noticed until now, this year I’m on fire with reading. I literally can’t stop ( and I don’t want to ). Today, I will talk to you about another hockey romance ( I’m hooked with those people ). Offside Play, by Lyssa Lemire is the first book of her series “Sin Bin Stories” and we follow Summer and Hudson.
Summer, after a tough summer, has to return to college. After she broke up with Sean, her boyfriend for 1.5 years, she wants nothing to do with him. Sean and Summer, both music majors, he on the piano and she on the violin, were happy… at least that’s what Summer thought. Right before he leaves for his summer tour in Europe, Sean suggests to her to put their relationship in an “open” mood in order to both feel free to sleep with other people if they want to. Something that Summer was completely against.
Now, they’re back at college and he wants to be back together. Something Summer doesn’t want but Sean seems to not get the “no” as an answer. At the same time, Summer meets Hudson in the English class, the new goalie for their Hockey team. He is a total grumpy big fella but she tries to become friends with him, or at least good schoolmates, and her opportunity to get closer to him comes when the teacher assigns them together for an essay.
Meanwhile, Hudson adopts a stray cat but with one of his teammates/roommates being allergic, their coach demands him to find another home for his cat, giving him one week to make the arrangements. When he sees Summer bothered and she admits to him her problem with Sean, not leaving her alone, Hudson has an idea. He offers to pretend that he is her new boyfriend in exchange for her to take his cat to her house until he is able to find an apartment that will allow pets. Summer agrees, but something that she doesn’t know is that Hudson was a fan of her way before getting transferred to the same college with her ( it’s not a creep, trust me ).
Be aware of the spoilers:
Some things that I didn’t like, was for example the poor use of the language in some scenes. In particular, was a nice written book, but some scenes were a little bit cringe for my liking. I would like to see more bonding between Hudson’s team and I would totally like more scenes with Summer and Olivia, her best friend.
Now, on the pros… is definitely the zero unnecessary drama that we got! Hell yeah, for that. We had those two in-love idiots smitten with each other and it was pure gold. No jealousy is the best kind of jealousy! I mean, yeah… Hudson could be a little bit possessive of her and didn’t like when other guys were looking at his girl, but at the same, he was proud that people were looking at her and finding her sexy ( what a healthy shit was that? I wanna cry ). The way that they dealt with Sean was a huge yes, even if I’d like him to suffer a little after how he treated Summer but anyway, those characters are better than me I guess. Hudson being the greenest flag out there is totally a bonus and of course, we can’t forget Salsa ( a.k.a the cat ). The most adorable grumpy kitten ever! Finally, the sex scenes were absolutely insane!! ( Hell yeah from me!! )
I loved the fact that Summer and Hudson were actually talking and communicating with each other. ( Even if it could take them a while, they always ended up talking about their feelings ). And of course, I liked that at the end, Hudson’s relationship with his dad was saved, showing us that his dad wasn’t a complete asshole… but he was just lost after losing his wife and he was trying to do his best for his son.
I liked the book a lot and I can’t wait to read the next two books of the series, “Chasing the Puck” ( about Olivia and Tuck ) and “Breaking Goal” ( about Maddie and Rhys ), especially since we took a small glimpse about their relationships.
It’s a 3.5/5 stars from me.
