Off Campus: episode 04 “The Breakup” – review

Hello hello,

Another day, another episode review. I mean, I’m having the time of my life! At first, I thought that it would be really difficult to keep up with work, my life and needing to watch one episode per day and write a review as well. But here I am, literally can’t wait to return home so I’ll do that.!

But I’ll stop talking about me now and I’ll dive into episode 4. You know the drill… Beware of the spoilers etc… and let’s talk about our favorite topic these days. Hannah and Garrett.

Right after the ending of episode 3 where she asked him to give her an orgasm, Hannah had a really heart-opening conversation with Garrett. She explains to him that when she was in high school, someone drugged her at a party and raped her. That’s the reason she doesn’t drink in public and that’s why she also has a huge problem with sex. No matter how much she likes someone or how much she’s having fun, right before she’s ready to come, she zones out and nothing happens.

Garrett is torn between going to find that monster and destroy him or hug Hannah until the end of time. Although he understands that she really wants him to help her and he agrees. His line “You’re my friend and you need me.” even if he only wanted to protect her from anyone and everything that moment, was so painful that I felt it!

Hannah’s teacher helps her with the song she is writing for the showcase, letting her know that a song doesn’t only need good lyrics but it needs to make you feel something. ( I felt so happy when she mentioned Paramore, I love this band. )

Meanwhile, Allie says to Sean that she wants to break up and he literally talks to her as she were a toddler and doing this to get his attention. I’m really having a really bad time here that I can’t punch the guy. I mean, dude… get over yourself.

Garrett wants to make Hannah feel good later, since they have planned a sex date literally, and he asks Dean’s advice in order to make her come. He tries to be discreet but Dean understands that it’s about Hannah and he assumes that she is a virgin. Now, I know that in the book, Garrett actually had this conversation with Birdie ( if I remember correctly ) but I loved this scene on the series. We see the biggest womanizer of the campus talking about consent and trust during sex. He didn’t try to make fun of his friend, or Hannah, or make the conversation awkward. He really tried to help and was supportive. It was a really good scene.

Hannah goes to Garrett’s and he is a complete gentleman with her. He gave her something to wear because he noticed that she was uncomfortable in the dress she was wearing. He turned around so she could change, no matter the fact that he would see her naked in a few minutes… ( I’m currently on the floor ). He even tried to make her feel safe. Their silly dance was everything.

Although they start making out and Hannah is really into it, she still has the same problem. Garrett tries to comfort her, letting her know that it’s completely normal for her to be afraid and feel distant. He has an idea that may help her, though. He wants her to pleasure herself while he is watching and at the same time, he will do the same thing for her. He wants to make her trust him and he thinks that it will help. The scene was hot, sweet and iconic at the same time. The actors did a really good job. You can feel the connection the characters build at that moment.

After that, they have a really sweet scene eating and talking but his phone buzzed with a text from another woman and Hannah literally runs away. Garrett talks to the boys on his team about Hannah and he realises that he likes her and he decides to talk to her, the same time that Logan gets jealous. ( Logan, I love you, you’re my favorite… you know that, but don’t worry, your girl is coming next season. )

Dean, Beau, Tucker and Garrett go to Allie’s show in order for Garrett to talk to Hannah about his feelings but Justin is already there too. Hannah and Justin get selected to play on the show and Dean volunteers Garrett, so he can be close to Hannah. Garrett has to dance for Kendall for the show ( the girl he was hooking up with a while ago ) and Hannah gets jealous. A few minutes later, Justin asks Hannah out and Garrett leaves the party heartbroken.

She talks with him and she realises that she doesn’t want to be there with Justin, but with Garrett. She realises that she likes Garrett. ( It was about time girl. ) So, she leaves the party to go find him, the same time that Allie calls the “Do not call” contact on her phone. ( Don’t go back to that douche my love! )

Hannah finds Garrett at the ring, practicing and she literally sings to him her feelings. That was probably the sweetest and most beautiful scene that I have seen on a show for a while. I mean, I’m such a sucker for gestures like that. Sue me. ( Please don’t, but yeah… you get it. )

The episode ends with Garrett entering the room, where she is and leaving us all without breath.

Another great episode. I really can’t believe how much I adore this show. It’s comforting and sweet and you want to see what will happen, even if you already know. The soundtrack was unbelievable again, with my personal favorite to be the original song for the series, “Baby now that I found you” by Ella Bright, the actress who plays Hannah.

I loved how they handled Hannah’s story about the rape and Garrett’s reaction. Sean keeps getting on my nerves and I really liked the “Drunk Shakespeare” scene. It wasn’t in the books but I found it unique and funny to watch.

It’s a 8.8/10 from me.
