Hello – hello my little faces. The teen series True Beauty is a Korean production of 2020. It stars Moon Ga-young, kpop band member Astro Cha Eun-Woo, Park Yoo-na, and Hwang In-yeop.
The story revolves around Lim Ju Kyung who is bullied by her classmates for her appearance. She feels trapped in this situation and has no idea what to do. But the solution comes when her family is forced to leave their apartment and return to their old home on the other side of town.
Because of this, Lim Ju Kyung has to change schools. So she decides to take matters into her own hands and changes her appearance with the help of makeup. In her new school, she immediately becomes loved by everyone because of her good character and her flawless skin. Her little utopia, however, is in danger when Lee Soo Ho discovers her secret.
THIS POST CONTAINS SPOILERS.
Although Soo Ho discovers Ju Kyung’s secret very early on, he does not betray her. On the contrary, they become friends and he protects her when there is a danger that someone else will see her without makeup. The two fall in love and then become a couple.
When Soo Jin discovers the truth, she protects her new friend, but things change when she learns about her relationship with Soo Ho. Blinded by her jealousy, she reveals the truth throughout the school, thus destroying what Ju Kyung had built for herself.
But Soo Ho is not the only one claiming Ju Kyung. The “bad boy” of the school and Soo Ho’s former best friend, Han Seo Jun shows his interest in her from the first moment he sees her. After a while ago, seeing how much she likes Soo Ho, he steps back and chooses to remain her friend.
Shortly before the finale, Soo Ho is forced to move to the USΑ due to his father’s health and breaks up with Ju Kyung. Although in the webtoon, on which the series is based, she develops a brief relationship with Seo Jun in the series, this does not happen. However, two years later and since they are now very good friends, Seo Jun reveals his feelings for her but without a response. Soo Ho returns to Korea and eventually, he and Ju Kyung end up together again.
My thoughts.
Usually, I do not write reviews with spoilers but for this series, I wanted to warn you. Until the last minute, I really believed that Ju Kyung would end up with Seo Jun. Their scenes were better written than those with Soo Ho and the chemistry of the two actors was excellent. But I did not remember the most important thing.
The “second leads” syndrome, as it is called in kdramas. It is when the screenwriter makes you fall in love with the poor second role, who is always there for the protagonist, it will literally… could die for her… but in the end, she will choose the protagonist. Who in fact, most of the time it looks like a “decorative pot” in relation to the second lead.
That’s what happened in this one too. If you see it because you support Soo Ho or because the cast is too hot for their own good, then you will have a good time. But if you love Seo Jun you are welcome to leave comments full of pain as soon as you finish the series.
Otherwise, the series manages to pass several messages to its audions. Directing is not very interesting but the fresh script and the funny scenes saves the situation. The performances of the actors are pretty good while the changes of scenery as it transports us outdoors several times does not make the viewer tired.
