Hello – hello my little faces. Today, I will talk to you about the third movie of The Mummy Trilogy. The title of the third movie is “The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor”. ( Here you can read about The Mummy and The Mummy Returns. )
THIS POST CONTAINS SPOILERS.
In this movie the setting is different. Away from out known Egypt and our beloved villain Mummy, Imhotep, this time we travel to China. In ancient China, a ruthless warlord becomes Dragon Emperor ( Jet Li ) and wants to rule not only his country but the whole world. To do this has to become immortal and orders his most loyal general to find Zi Yuan ( Michelle Yeoh ) a witch who knows the secret of immortality.
Zi Yuan informs the Emperor that the only way to become immortal is to drink from Shangri-La. She asks him for a favor because she helped him to let her marry his general but the Emperor knowing that she will never become his orders to kill her loved one. Zi Yuan curses him and his army to stay statues forever and runs away.
Almost 2000 years later, in 1946 Alex O’Connell ( Luke Ford ) and his team find the tomb of Emperor but he attacked by a girl who’s trying to kill them. Back in England after the war his parents, Rick ( Brendan Fraser ) and Evelyn ( Maria Bello ) they made a promise to stop going on archeological missions but when someone from the government asks them to return “the Eye of Shangri-La” back to China they accept immediately. Not only they missed their missions but they could see Evelyn’s brother, Jonathan ( John Hannah ).
When they arrive at Jonathan’s club, who has named it Imhoptes, they find out that Alex has dropped out of school and discovered the tomb of the Emperor. After the first shock, they try to accept this and Alex goes with them to the museum to show his discovery to his parents. There, is his mentor Roger Wilson ( David Calder ) who secretly works for a general who wants to bring the Emperor back to life. Wilson and general make O’Connells to wake up the Emperor using the Eye of Shangri-La while Alex tries to stop them.
The girl who tried to kill him, Lin ( Isabella Leong ) informs them about the Emperor’s plans to drink from Shangri-La, become immortal and bring his army back in order to rule the world. All together start a journey to the Himalayas and with unexpected help from the Yetis find the Shangri-La first, but Emperor is close enough.
Ok, that’s it. I will not give you up the end… lol. The two first ones were better than this one and many fans believe that it was because they recast Evelyn who was played by Rachel Weisz. It’s not known why she wasn’t in the third movie but some gossips report that it was due to her pregnancy around that time that the movie was filmed.
I don’t know if Weisz was that something that was missing from the movie but definitely something was missing. The story was good, the acting great, the direction on point but wasn’t enough. I will always love this Trilogy, but the first two will always have a special place in my heart.
Let me know what you think about the post in the comments below. Until next time…
