Hello, my little faces. Today I will talk to you about another Korean tv series that I totally loved. The King: Eternal Monarch is a 2020 production based on two words.
The story follows the life of Lee Gon ( Lee MinHo ), the loveable king of “The Kingdom of Korean”. You see, Lee Gon is king on a parallel universe where North and South Korea never separated.
Everything started almost 20 years ago when Lee Lim ( Lee JungJin ), the brother of the king, staged a coup in order to overthrow his brother and become a king. Lee Lim killed the king and tried to kill his nephew as well but someone came and saved the little prince. The unknown man leaves something strange behind before leaves and at the same time the powerful object that Lim was after breaks in two. Lim takes one piece before run away and Gon the other one.
In 2019, Lee Gon finds a door that leads to another world ( ours ) and he finally is able to find Jeong Tae Eul ( Kim GoEun ) who was looking for her all those years. With the help of his best friend and chief of his guards, Jo Yeong ( Woo DoHwan ), Lee Gon will try to discover all the secrets that this new world has to offer and at the same time to find out if his uncle lives there as Gon believes.
If you like series with parallel universes, doppelgangers, and time travel this is definitely one of those series that you will not regret if you decide to watch. The cast did a great job playing two roles at the same time, one character for each universe, and the direction is very remarkable. At the beginning it’s mentioning each time which of the two worlds the characters are in but as the episodes go by we no longer need it since the viewer can distinguish the two worlds.
The amazing script and well-written story without plot holes gives a perfect result leaving the viewer satisfied with what he saw. Each character has its “closure” without leaving us with the question of what happened to someone while the chemistry of the two protagonists is excellent.
Something that is worth mentioning is the performance of Woo DoHwan who played the roles of Jo Eun Seob and Jo Yeong and he was really amazing. Especially in the scenes where the two characters are together, you do not understand that it is the same actor. Even the expressions of each character were different making us wonder if DoHwan has a twin brother and they hide it from us ( he hasn’t… I checked it ).
The series has one season with a total of 16 episodes and it’s available on Netflix.
