Well, we all know the story of Romeo & Juliet. A love story so strong and cursed that our two lovers decided to sacrifice their lives to be together. But, how many of you know about Rosaline? Romeo’s girlfriend and Juliet’s cousin? Hmm none? A few?? I knew it, that’s why I will introduce her to you today!
Romeo and Rosaline have been together for a while but their families have been mortal enemies ( blah blah ) they have to keep it a secret. Rosaline invites Romeo to a ball that her family is hosting. Romeo tries to avoid it but he promises to go when she tells him that it will be a masquerade ball. Meanwhile, Rosaline’s father wants her to get married but every date that he arranges for her ends up as a disaster. He insists that she will meet with the young noble Lord Dario. The two of them go on a boat trip and she ends up missing the ball at the same time that Romeo meets Juliet and they fall in love.
Romeo, starts dating Juilet while he is still in a relationship with Rosaline and when she finds it out makes a plan in order to win her boyfriend back. The story follows the events of the original story and Rosaline with Dario are trying to convince Juliet that her plan is very dangerous, but with no results. Now Rosaline ends up being imprisoned for her cousin’s death but she escapes to help the two lovers. Dario, who managed to inform Romeo about Juliet’s plan helps Rosaline to make Capulet and Montagues believe that the two love birds are actually dead.
In the end, they manage to help Romeo and Juliet run away to Cyprus for them to live happily ever after. While Dario and Rosaline finally admit to each other that they have fallen in love.
My thoughts:
I found the movie a beautiful parody of the original story. The writer and director managed to make it visible to the audience that while it is indeed possible to meet someone and fall in love immediately with them, it takes time to get to know each other and actually end up loving them. I liked the way that the original characters has been rewritten in order to see the story from Rosaline’s perspective and the cast did an excellent job.
Usually, I dislike it when modern elements make an appearance in movies like this but Rosaline is a well-written kind of parody so I ended up enjoying this small marriage of modern elements with the Shakespearean era
In conclusion, Rosaline is a fresh and funny movie to watch. I believe you’ll enjoy it and if you are not a huge fan of Romeo and Juliet ( like me ) you’ll finally have the chance to say “There, I told you so. Everything happened just too quickly!”
I give the movie an 8/10!
