Adapted from the manga “Perfect Propose”.

Hello my friends! Have you ever heard of the phrase “Love it so much that it hurts”? Well, that sums up all my thoughts about “Perfect Propose”. Last Sunday, me and my friends, were searching for a series to binge-watch, so one of them proposed, “Perfect propose”, as she’s already a fan of the manga. “It’s only a 3 hours watch and you’ll definitely identify with the work life of the protagonist”. That’s what she said. If you’ve read any of my articles, you’ve maybe noticed, how I love realistic relationships. This time, reality hit us so hard that 3 hours later, we’re already crying and still, I loved it.

Casting

Nomura Kota as Watari Hirokuni

Kaneko Shunya as Fukaya Kai

Plot

Hiro, is what you can call a workaholic guy. He’s living a not so healthy life, as he’s always working so many hours that he doesn’t sleep or eat enough. He pretty much hates his life and don’t expect much as he’s completely convinced himself that he’s not good at work and not capable enough, so that he has to work more time to complete his work. His job environment has made him believe that he’s lacking ability and whatever job he does it’ll always be at the same level. Hiro is the type of person that will always protect his co-workers and do their part of work in order to help them, but he will never think about himself.

Kai, is some years younger than Hiro. He’s a quiet and caring person that grew up without his mother and some years later, his father left him too. He now works and lives at a restaurant, under the protection of the kind owner. He’s quite lonely and he’s also not expecting much from life.

When they’re kids, Hiro and Kai were very close. Hiro noticed how lonely Kai was and started to take care of him and keep him company. They built a strong relationship and promised each other to get married. But as life happens, one day Hiro never saw Kai again. Moving on today, more than 10 years later, when one day Hiro returned from work, to find Kai at his doorstep.

Kai suddenly found himself with no place to stay and the first thing he thought was to look for his old friend, the only person who ever took care of him. Now, they’re living together and this time it’s his turn to take care of him. He cooks for him and day by day Hiro’s home becomes livelier. Hiro seems happier, healthier and he finally finds a purpose to come back home. He starts wanting to spend more time with Kai, but balancing work and personal life seems very difficult for him. Kai, on the other hand, is feeling very sad and lonely day by day, but he only waits quietly for Hiro and doesn’t want to burden him more with his personal problems. Hiro finally realizes, that he’s missing so much and that’s when he hits a point in his life where he can’t withstand it no more. Kai, is also at his limit, because as much as he wants to help Hiro, he feels that he’s becoming a burden to him. But just before Kai decides to leave him, Hiro finds the strength to make the next step. He finally believed in himself and decided to quit his job and prioritize his life. He never let Kai leave and decides to become his old self again, the person who Kai always loved and admired.

My opinion

“Perfect propose” is a series that doesn’t lack anything. The plot is complete, deep and realistic and it develops a lot even though it’s a short length series. The acting was also very good and you could feel all of their emotions.

It’s a very heartwarming drama and as much painful it is to watch, as much triggering it is. You can relate with both protagonists in a deep way, but it gives you a lot of hope at the end. The big lesson is, that all that matters in this life is to live. And to know that it’s not bad to give and expect something in return, even if it’s personal life or work. Because that means that you appreciate and respect yourself and all the effort you give. We must understand that we deserve better and we are the ones that have to claim our happiness and not let other people deceive us that we’re not capable of doing what we want.

You may be a person that also doesn’t expect much from life, but truth is even without realizing it we’re always looking for a light, just as Kai run to his childhood crush when he felt alone, and this time was his turn to protect him and to seek for the warmness he’s been avoiding for years.

Thanks for reading,

Utaku
