Hello there my little faces. Today we’ll talk about the series Doctor Stranger a Korean production of 2014 in which stars Lee Jong-suk, Jin Se-yeon, Park Hae-jin, and Kang So-ra.
When the famous South Korean heart surgeon Park Cheol and his son Park Hoon suddenly disappear – almost – no one knows that they have been abducted and taken prisoner in North Korea. Hoon grows up there with his father, since they can not go back, and becomes a doctor as well.
While things seem to be going well for Hoon since he will soon graduate and his girlfriend Song Jae-hee has agreed to marry him everything changes. Jae-hee’s father is accused of espionage, the authorities arrest the whole family and sending them to concentration camps.
Now, the only way for Hoon to save the love of his life is to escape. He manages to return to South Korea and tries in every way to find information about where Jae-hee may be. All his efforts seem to fall on deaf ears when he finds a job in one of the best hospitals in the country.
There he finally finds a way to come up with something while he has to cope with the most difficult medical cases together with Oh Soo-hyun and his biggest rival Han Jae-joon, at the same time that a doctor who looks exactly as Jae-hee comes to the hospital.
The series started very strong with a fairly fast development but somewhere it started to be tiring. The almost zero chemistry of the protagonist couple and the fact that the protagonist herself was treated as a supportive character played a big role. While the main story is about how Hoon will find Jae-hee, the screenwriters forgot to make her even likable…
As a result, Kang So-ra playing Oh Soo-hyun not only stole our hearts but also the lights from Jin Se-yeon. The only thing the screenwriters did not leave her to steal was Hoon himself, something I was personally disappointed with. Her chemistry with Lee Jong-suk was so great that at first, I thought she was the protagonist.
The series has some outstanding medical cases, and if you like medical tv series you will enjoy them a lot. The action scenes, however, are minimal and the script seems to be repeated many times. It has almost no twists as most of the possible plot twists are either explained too early or the viewer can discover them on their own.
It consists of 20 one-hour episodes and is available on Netflix.
